Open Art Studio
Open Art Studio is available only to students currently enrolled in a drawing, painting or sculpture class. Students may work on class projects or individual work using the studio easels or props for still life displays. Hours: Mondays, 9am to 4pm, September 20 -November 15. Registration fee of $20.

This class presents the opportunity to draw, paint or sculpt from the human figure without formal instruction. Cards may be used from September 2010 through August 2011. Drop-ins are welcome at $18 member/$20 non-members per week and must pay the monitor at the beginning of each class. In the Sculpture Studio

This course is modeled on the traditional Academy sculptor’s studio. Students will work on their own concepts and ideas, with the opportunity to work from life. The instructor will assist anyone who might need help with special methods and techniques. The primary media will be terra cotta. For those who want to work in stone or wood, you will need to provide your own materials and work outdoors. All disciplines, methods and techniques will be demonstrated.

CERAMICS

Tuition covers the use of the studio tools, glazes, firings and your first bag of clay. Additional clay may be purchased at CSS as follows: $20 for a 25# bag of
stoneware or terra cotta and $25 for porcelain. Tool kits are available for $20 as well as a selection of individual tools. Please bring a towel with you to the first class for all wheel throwing classes.
Open Clay Studio
Open Clay Studio is available only to students currently
enrolled in a ceramics class. Tech support is available during most open studio times; tech hours will be posted on the door. Hours: Mondays, 9am to 12 noon, Tuesdays through Saturdays, 1 - 4pm. Registration fee of $20.
Members’ Wood Firing
Level: All levels, 6-12 participants

Chester Springs Studio offers it’s members a chance to fire their work in our wood kiln. A ceramic artist with experience in wood firing will oversee the firing which takes places over a weekend. Participants are required to be there all day Saturday and sign up for a shift(s) on Sunday. Each participant will be guided in glazing suitable for the wood kiln, help load the kiln, split and stack firewood and stoke the wood kiln until it reaches temperature (cone 10). To sign up for the wood firing, please contact Heidi Brett first at hbrett@yellowsprings.org for more information. A second wood firing will be scheduled for November 13 and 14, if the first firing fills to capacity.

Students will explore ways to hand build based on the way clay really behaves. Learning to build for strength and form includes soft slab, press molds, expanded clay and pinch and coil.
